Muramaris' Cottages

Muramaris’ cottages can be found 5 km north of Visby, on the beautiful limestone coast of Gotland.
Villa Muramaris was an artists’ house from the beginning of last century. It was built by Johnny and Ellen Roosval during the years 1915 to 1917.

Johnny Roosval was Sweden’s first professor in art history and his wife Ellen (born von Hallwyl) was a true artist; a painter, sculptor and musician.
Muramaris was built as an Italian villa with open loggia and was surrounded by an Italian style barrock garden.
Next to Ellen's summer workshop 5 guest-cottages were built and Rolf de Maré’s (Ellen’s son) red cottage has been restored as well.
A fire completely destroyed the villa in the beginning of 2013 but as by miracle, the side wing, workshop as well as the sculptures in the garden, survived without any damage.
